Other systems
In existing homes it is often not practical or even possible to install floor heating directly onto the existing screed before placing a new screed on top of that. This is mainly due to the increase in floor to ceiling height, which is usually around 60 millimeters. An alternative solution is “low build-up” systems, where floor panels with a pre-grooved pattern are placed over the existing screed. While this system is lower, the extra build-up will still vary anywhere from 15 to 35 millimetres. This will mean additional work such as trimming doors, modifying stairs or adjusting the height of countertops. In addition it leads to a loss in room height, as the floor is now higher.
The complete removal of the existing screed and replacing it with the new screed and floor heating is the most rigorous solution. However, this can be a drastic process for several reasons. First, there are the costs associated with removing the old screed and installing the new screed and floor heating. Second, this process often leads to building waste that needs to be disposed of. Third, removing the existing screed will create a construction pit in the house that will impede daily living during construction. Fourth, it is also important to note that it is not always technically feasible to completely remove the old screed, for instance due to structural limitations or other complex factors.
